There has been a lot of buzz around antioxidants in the past decade or so. More and more people are realizing the vital role that antioxidants play in overall health and well-being.
But what are antioxidants and how do they protect us and keep us healthy? Our bodies are essentially a giant chemical laboratory with hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions occurring almost every second. Our bodies rely on chemistry to make new cells, to produce energy and to produce most of the ingredients we need to survive. These chemical reactions sometimes result in oxidation or the production of free radicals.
Free radicals can damage the cells, they can damage cell DNA, and they can even result in the premature death of healthy cells. Free radicals are therefore very dangerous in terms of your health. Changes in DNA for example, can result in a cell mutating into a cancer cell.
